Been w/o a psychiatrist for well over a year, been off Effexor about a year. Could feel depression returning, but finding a psychiatrist who takes Medi-Cal is like trying to find the needle in the haystack. My GP just put me back on Amitriptyline. I was on it several years ago and don't recall any negative side effects, don't recall why I stopped. Anybody got anything to say about this stuff? Does it also go by another name? Thanks.

Re: Amitriptyline
Sun, April 5, 2009 - 10:04 PMUnless I'm mistaken, amitriptyline hydrochloride is also known as Elavil. I took it many years ago with good success. When I changed doctors due to insurance change, the new doctor refused to continue my script and I was forced to wean off of Elavil. I don't recall any negative side effects while I was on it. Then again, that was in 1989.

Re: Amitriptyline
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 10:39 PMLeah is right. The "name brand" for Amitriptyline is Elavil and I too have used it with great success. Unfortunately it's one of those medications that you have to keep increasing in order for it to continue to be effective.

PS: Even my cat's been prescribed Elavil to help him relax and not be stressed about a move! lol -

Re: Amitriptyline
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 1:55 PMi take it for the week before my period, to help with the pmdd. it works okay, but makes me very, very drowsy, and if i take it any other time, i feel it makes my suicidality greater since it saps my energy so much, and i usually don't want to get out of bed 'itl 4 pm. i take it as little as possible. i'm very sensitive to its sedative effect, but i don't see any other side effects from it. -

Re: Amitriptyline
Tue, May 5, 2009 - 10:06 AMI have been on amitriptyline for about a month now. It does seem to be helping with the depression and it does seem to be helping me get to sleep faster and better. The only negative side effect so far is that the ol' libido has taken another dive same as with Effexxor. -

Re: Amitriptyline
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 2:47 PMMy wife takes a large dose (100mg) of Amitryiptylene for neuropathy and I take a very small dose (10 mgs) for GI problems. Mine is not enough to sedate me, but hers did, initially.
We each take other things for depression.

Re: Amitriptyline
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 11:45 AMI have been on amitriptyline for 3 weeks so far- i am mainly taking it because it is supposed to help my narcolepsy ( i am also clinically depressed and had an awful reaction to Lexapro and several other drugs)- i feel no reaction, good or bad yet . I am really hoping it will help but will only stay on it another week or so. I have very violent dreams one after the other and am up about every 15 minutes.
